Fascinating feats of fish filleting will be on show in Cleethorpes this August bank holiday weekend as the UK’s top fishmongers compete for the title of British Fish Craft Champion.
North East Lincolnshire Council is delighted to be hosting the British Fish Craft Championships®, bringing together the nation’s best fishmongers from independent shops to supermarket chains, to test their skills, speed and accuracy.
The event is organised by the National Federation of Fishmongers and has been running for more than 60 years.
Open to anyone involved in the fish, poultry or game trade, the competitions test the skills that are necessary in the preparation of fish and poultry in readiness for use by the final consumer.
The judges are all experienced fishmongers and the competitors will be assessed on presentation, general appearance, hygiene and performance.
Marquees will be erected in Cleethorpes Leisure Centre car park where the following activities will take place over the three-day event:
- Saturday 23 August, 10am to 6pm filleting and cooking demonstrations
- Sunday 24 August, 8.30am to 7pm competition and crowning of the British Fish Craft Champion
- Monday 25 August, from 10am filleting and cooking demonstrations.
Fish from the competitions will be on sale to the public to take home.
North East Lincolnshire Council is sponsoring the championships along with a wide range of major retailers and companies from the fish industry.
Gary Hooper, immediate past president of the National Federation of Fishmongers, said: “The Federation is delighted to have been invited to hold The British Fish Craft Championships in North East Lincolnshire.
“This will be the first time this prestigious event has taken place in what is viewed by many as the home of British fish and we are looking forward to a warm welcome. We are also really excited to be working alongside North East Lincolnshire Council who will be sponsoring the event for the first time.
“My thanks also go out to the Grimsby Fish Merchants Association, Grimsby Fish Docks Enterprises and Flatfish Ltd. for their invaluable help and continued support of the championships.”
In addition to the fish festivities there will be more fun around the resort over the weekend, including street entertainers, an Italian themed market on the promenade and the annual Classic Car and Vintage Festival at Meridian Park Showground.
