Elliston Football Team After The War
Pictured is the Elliston A football team of 1946. Back row, from left: Short, Fenner, Daley, Lynn, Farman and Mr Leaf; Middle row: Fenner, Machon, Dennison and Donson. Front row: Parker and Bridge.
Steve Farman, a member of the school football team, supplied the details for the team photograph. He said: “Elliston School had one of the first school teams after the Second World War.
“The photograph was taken at Thrunscoe School in 1946 and the image was reproduced from the small, rather brown, original print, which was processed in the Elliston School darkroom in 1946.
“Everything was in short supply following the war and the team shirts and socks were from before the war. They were rather worn and various shades of white. In addition to this, most families could not afford new kit, even if it was available.
“The following season, 1947-8, the team won the Grimsby and District Championship Shield, beating the mighty Armstrong Street A-team.
“There were also three other members of this team who are not shown in the photograph. They are Ray Topple, Byron Marks and Stan Fisher.
“Mr Leaf was the football master and he was great at the job. He was also on the Grimsby Boys Selection Committee.”
